Teja Gavankar is trained as a painter, and her practice explores spatial encounters shaped by both objective reality and subjective perception. She
draws on mathematics, geometry, physics, metaphysics, and psychology to give her work depth and meaning. She plays with perception using texture, scale, and form. Her goal is to move from the precise to the abstract, from the known to the uncertain. Her work lives on the edge of doubt, surprise, and absurdity.

She earned a Master of Visual Arts (painting) from M.S. University, Baroda in 2014. She studied art education and fine art in Mumbai schools from 2002 to 2011. She has served as visiting faculty at various design and art schools in Mumbai since 2011. These include Rachana Sansad Academy of
Architecture, L.S. Raheja School of Art, and Tata Institute programs.

Teja has received the Junior Fellowship from the Ministry of Culture (2018) and a grant from Space 118 Fine Arts (2020). She has also been in residencies across Canada and India, such as at Palette people, Verticale Artist Center in Laval, and the Darling Foundry in Montreal.

Her work connects precise thinking with intuitive abstraction. She invites viewers to rethink space and perception.
