Tanya Gupta
Tanya Gupta is a visual artist based in India whose practice explores the lived realities of women, with particular attention to social conditioning, domestic space, labour, silence, and emotional inheritance. Working primarily with watercolour on handmade paper, she develops layered surfaces through repeated washes, allowing images and marks to accumulate, overlap, and partially disappear.
Her practice examines how social expectations are absorbed through everyday experiences and gradually become internalised, shaping behaviour, relationships, identity, and the body. Drawing from personal and collective experiences, Gupta often reinterprets familiar cultural symbols, domestic imagery, and narratives surrounding womanhood to question ideals of selflessness, endurance, care, and perfection. Gupta holds a BFA from the Faculty of Visual Arts, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi (2022) and an MFA from Kala Bhavana, Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan (2024).
She recently completed a practice-led research scholarship at the Lalit Kala Akademi Regional Centre, Lucknow, where she investigated the tension between societal myths and contemporary women’s lives.
