Hemsagar
Hem Sagar (b. 1987) is an Indian visual artist working between large-scale public murals and contemplative works on paper. His relationship with materials began in his family’s tailoring workshop, where he spent his childhood watching fabric being cut apart and pulled back together with a needle and thread. That single line of stitching—holding two separate edges in conversation—became the foundation of how he sees space and structure.
In his studio, Sagar works around the idea of ‘Antaral’—the quiet, unseen space between things. He approaches heavy paper not as a flat surface, but as skin. Using a blade, he scratches into the paper to uncover the raw fibers hidden underneath, combining these marks with transparent watercolor washes and stitched thread.
Sagar holds a BFA from Jamia Millia Islamia and an MFA from the College of Art, Delhi. He has completed major public art commissions across India, including installations at the New Parliament Building and national airport terminals.
