Pragati Mathur
Pragati Mathur is a Bengaluru-based textile artist and experimental weaver whose practice redefines the boundaries of
traditional handloom. With over three decades of engagement with textile design, she works across weaving, sculpture, and
installation, combining natural fibres, unconventional materials, and diverse weaving techniques to create richly textured,
spatial works.
Deeply informed by India’s craft heritage, Mathur’s practice explores the expressive and conceptual possibilities of textiles
beyond their functional role. Her works often translate abstract ideas—such as memory, emotion, and cultural identity—into
tactile visual forms through layered structures, colour interplay, and material innovation.
She has produced a wide range of tapestries, rugs, wearable pieces, and large-scale installations, including major public
commissions such as Nauraspur at Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru. Through her practice, Mathur continues
to expand the language of contemporary textile art while maintaining a strong dialogue with traditional weaving knowledge.
