Kumar Misal
Kumar Misal is an artist whose practice is deeply rooted in his upbringing in a farming family, where resilience and self-reliance shaped his worldview. Trained at the Sir J.J. School of Art, Mumbai, he developed a strong foundation in academic realism, later blending it with experimental techniques. His innovative practice includes making his own paper from natural fibres such as rice and banana, aligning his work with themes of sustainability and authenticity.
Kumar’s art reflects rural life, community traditions, and personal memory, often infused with intimate details and symbolic imagery. Inspired by thinkers and leaders like Shivaji Maharaj, Sant Dnyaneshwar, B.R. Ambedkar, and Paulo Coelho, his works carry layers of philosophical reflection. He has received recognition through awards and scholarships, including Kala Shakti and CCRT, which encouraged his explorations. By merging academic skill, personal narrative, and material experimentation, Misal creates works that celebrate resilience, unity, and the enduring spirit of farming communities.
