Dipankar Das

Dipankar Das is a contemporary artist whose practice is rooted in personal experience and the environments he has inhabited, from his village in Tripura to Santiniketan. His work navigates questions of identity, belonging, and acceptance, shaped by his perspective as a homosexual man exploring same-gender intimacy. Drawing on the oral traditions of Manipur passed down by his grandparents, he interweaves memory with myth to create diary-like narratives that are both quiet and bold. Often merging text with imagery and infusing irony and humor, his paintings question social norms and the unspoken codes of subcultures. Fragmented compositions reflect the fractured nature of memory, while layered metaphors open a space for dialogue between the personal and collective, past and present. In doing so, his practice becomes a living archive of experiences and emotions that resist easy categorization, yet speak to broader human truths.
